Hey everyone! Chester (as I have decided to name him) got home safe and sound yesterday. He got a clean bill of health, and the surgery was completely routine. He was a little timid after the car ride, but has since brightened up. Pictures are on the way! However, my computer was recently attacked by a virus (the one I'm on right now isn't mine), so I'm not sure how long it will be.

Any how, I'm supposed to be giving Chester pain killers through a syringe every morning for the next five days. He had his first one today, and it was kind of a disastor. I held him while my mom attempted to get the syringe in his mouth, and I'd say only about half of the meds got there. I also got a few sratches, but no surprises there Laughing

Does anyone have any suggestions for using the syringe? I would love for him to be able to have the full dose.

Thank you for any help! Oh, and I won't be able to check the messages until later tonight, so I probably can't answer any questions.

Are the meds flavoured at all? If so, you might be able to feed them to him without having to hold him. Bea's furosemide is strawberry-flavoured - med time is treat time!

Otherwise, you could try injecting some berries with it and see if he'll eat the berries. Or, mix them with something else he likes (i.e. honey).

They are definitely not flavored! We put a little bit on his lettuce to see if that would work, and he avoided it like the plague. I'll try that berry trick though.

They suggested to me giving Bunny's meds via syringe, that did NOT work eventhough she actaully loved them (they were Tootie Fruity flavored Laughing )

I ended up mixing them with mashed up banana or applesauce, and she'd clean the bowl.

I seemed to develop a knack for this when my poor little first bunny fell ill. Tilting his/her head up slightly i found placing the syringe behind the teeth in the corner of the mouth made them open up and from there it was easy to squirt down. My description is poor but luckily you found the apple method.
I just got one of my little girls spayed and found the medication from my vets is often flavoured. Pandora really doesn't mind having it if it tastes of honey Very Happy

We've been having this trouble too but with wormer!! My boyfriend found a very effective way though - when we put Chloe back into her cage at night he just slipped the syringe into the corner of her mouth whilst she was trying to chew the bars and she took it fine, trying to shove the whole syringe into her mouth!!
